UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION “UNITED NATIONS GAMES” ADOPTED
On 6 September 2024, the Resolution “United Nations Games” initiated by Turkmenistan and India under agenda item 11 “Sport for peace and development: Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideals” was considered and adopted during the 107th plenary meeting of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
While presenting the resolution, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Aksoltan Ataeva noted that the resolution is aimed at establishing a solid platform for the implementation of sports diplomacy on the UN platform - one of the main priorities of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy.
It was particularly noted in her speech that the First United Nations Games initiated by Turkmenistan and held in April this year represented the spirit of mutual respect, trust and cooperation between the diplomatic missions of the UN Member States and representatives of the UN Secretariat, as well as clearly demonstrated the reformative power of sports in overcoming stereotypes, strengthening multilateral dialogue and tolerance.
The draft resolution on the United Nations Games was prepared following consultations with UN Member States and taking into consideration all constructive proposals.
The Resolution regulates the holding of the UN Games on an annual basis and provides for the establishment of an Organizing Committee, as well as a Trust Fund for the arrangement and holding of the next Games in April 2025.
The Resolution cosponsored by 87 States was adopted by consensus.
