UN PUBLISHES RESOLUTION ON THE YEAR OF INTERNATIONAL LAW IN ALL OFFICIAL LANGUAGES

United Nations General Assembly resolution 80/295, “Year of International Law, 2028,” has been officially published in all six official languages of the United Nations. The document, initiated by Turkmenistan, has been issued under agenda item 14, “Culture of peace,” and its text is available on the UN website.

The publication of the resolution in all official languages completes the process of its formalization following its adoption by the General Assembly and ensures the document’s wide dissemination among the Member States of the Organization.

The resolution proclaims 2028 as the Year of International Law. The preamble of the document emphasizes the central role of international law and the Charter of the United Nations in maintaining peace, security and friendly relations among States, as well as the importance of education, capacity-building and technical assistance in this field, particularly for developing countries, least developed countries and landlocked developing countries, as well as small island developing States. Particular note is also made of the contribution to promoting international law made by the United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, the related Seminar, the United Nations Audiovisual Library of International Law and specialized publications of the Office of Legal Affairs.

The General Assembly called upon Member States, entities of the United Nations system and other relevant stakeholders to observe the Year of International Law through educational initiatives, capacity-building activities and measures to raise public awareness. In a separate provision, the Assembly welcomed the intention of Turkmenistan to convene a Global Forum on International Law in December 2028.
