On the last Sunday of May, Turkmenistan traditionally celebrated one of its brightest national holidays — the Day of the Turkmen Carpet. The epicenter of the festivities was the National Museum of Turkmen Carpet in Ashgabat, where a large-scale exhibition brought together masterpieces of classical heritage and works by contemporary artisans.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by the leadership of the Mejlis, representatives of ministries and government agencies, public figures, as well as heads of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in the country. In his congratulatory Address to the participants of the celebration, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the magnificent Turkmen carpet, born from the talent and wisdom of Turkmen women, has long transcended the boundaries of decorative and applied art, becoming an invaluable contribution to the treasury of universal civilization.

The exhibition featured a rich diversity of forms. Alongside monumental carpets adorned with traditional göls, visitors could also see items that for centuries formed the basis of nomadic life: chuvals, khorjuns, kilims, prayer rugs, and exquisite horse trappings. A modern interpretation of this ancient craft was presented by domestic entrepreneurs, whose stands displayed carpet portraits, picturesque woven panels depicting landscapes, silk products, and refined handmade souvenirs.

For many years of dedicated work and loyalty to national traditions, the country’s finest craftswomen were awarded the honorary title “Türkmenistanyň at gazanan halyçysy” (“Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan”) by presidential decree.

The Secretary General of the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY), Sultan Raev, presented the “Türkmenhaly” association with a special diploma for its contribution to the development of carpet weaving traditions across the Turkic world. The diplomat noted that the Turkmen carpet is not merely a textile product, but an encoded genetic code and spiritual heritage, while Turkmenistan’s experience in preserving this craft under modern conditions is truly unique.

In the second half of the day, the 26th meeting of the World Association of Connoisseurs of Turkmen Carpets took place. Scholars, art historians, researchers, and representatives of international business circles discussed the phenomenon of the growing demand for Turkmen carpets on the global market.

Festive events, exhibitions, and academic sessions held throughout the country on this day once again confirmed that the ancient art of carpet weaving remains a living and continuously developing part of modern Turkmen culture.
