On April 28, 2026, a meeting was held in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova between the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Ukraine, Toyly Atayev, who is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Moldova, and a Member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, Chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Turkmenistan, Petru Burduja.

During the meeting, the parties held a substantive discussion on current issues and prospects for the development of interparliamentary cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Moldova. The Moldovan side informed about the establishment of a newly created parliamentary friendship group with Turkmenistan in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing its intention to ensure that its activities are practical and systematic in nature.

The Turkmen side welcomed this information, noting that an interparliamentary friendship group with the Republic of Moldova is already functioning in the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. In this regard, both sides confirmed their readiness to build consistent and meaningful cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, as well as to substantively consider joint initiatives.

Concrete plans to deepen cooperation were discussed, including the organization of mutual visits at the parliamentary level and the expanding contacts between relevant committees. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of updating the legal and contractual framework of bilateral relations.

The Moldovan side expressed interest in visiting Turkmenistan to hold meetings with Turkmen colleagues in Ashgabat in order to discuss priority areas of cooperation and develop coordinated approaches to the further development of interparliamentary ties. An invitation was also extended to the Turkmen side to visit Chisinau for corresponding meetings at the parliamentary level.

The parties agreed that the consistent strengthening of interparliamentary interaction would contribute to the overall development of Turkmen-Moldovan relations and serve as an important factor in expanding multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation.

During the meeting, an exchange of views also took place on issues of trade, economic, and cultural-humanitarian cooperation, including the implementation of joint cultural initiatives, the promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of both countries, and coordination of efforts within international organizations.

The growing role of parliamentary diplomacy as an effective tool for advancing the bilateral agenda was also noted.
