On April 29, 2026, a flower-laying ceremony was held in the village of Delacău, Anenii Noi District of the Republic of Moldova, at the memorial where the outstanding Turkmen prose writer and war correspondent Nurmyrat Saryhanov is buried.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of Turkmenistan, concurrently accredited to the Republic of Moldova, Toyly Atayev, the Head of the Anenii Noi District, Moisei Alexandru, the mayor of Delacău, Gheorghe Vasiliţa; representatives of the public, school students, and local residents. The participants honored the memory of the writer, who heroically died in May 1944 in a battle for the liberation of Moldovan land from fascist invaders.

Nurmyrat Saryhanov was born in 1906 in the village of Yzgant near Geoktepe in the Ahal velayat, into a peasant family. In 2026, the 120th anniversary of the birth of one of the prominent representatives of modern Turkmen literature is being marked, whose name holds a достойное place in the history of our country. His literary legacy, shaped by a deep understanding of people’s lives and traditions, is imbued with sincere love for the Motherland, humanism, and high artistic mastery.

Saryhanov’s works have become outstanding examples of Turkmen prose. They reflect timeless aspects of the life and traditions of the Turkmen people. His most famous work, the novella “Shukur Bakhshi”, was published posthumously and was later adapted into a film.

In the autumn of 1942, Saryhanov went to the front. Fighting in the units of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, the Turkmen writer took part in the liberation of Ukraine and later Moldova from Nazi invaders. On May 4, 1944, Nurmyrat Saryhanov died in battle.

Participants of the memorial ceremony for the outstanding writer and hero, who gave his life for peace and freedom, noted that the heroic fate of Nurmyrat Saryhanov became the embodiment of the unity of word and deed. His life, short but bright, serves as an example of courage, dedication, and spiritual strength, and his works continue to resonate with readers today.

The memorial to the soldiers who fell during World War II in the liberation of the village of Delacău was fully restored at the initiative of the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, by the Turkmen side with the support of the Moldovan authorities, and was ceremonially opened in 2017 with the participation of the President of the Republic of Moldova and an official Turkmen delegation.
